Ye are saved -- "Ye are being saved"

Believed in vain -- "became believers" ... without effect, without evidence. (Believed without a change in life and conduct.)

The twelve -- Considered as an official group.

Five hundred brethren -- When? Jerusalem or Galilee? Probably on a mountain, Matthew 28:16-17. Jesus’ resurrection was not something done in a corner.

Asleep -- dead, Matthew 27:52; John 11:11; Acts 7:60. "cemetery" = "a sleeping place"

1 Corinthians 15:7

James -- the only one then living and well known was the Lord’s brother, Gal. 2.9; Acts 15.13.

Apostles -- John 12:3-5; Acts 1:3; Luke 24:50;

One born out of due time -- As of a woman normally past the age of child bearing.

Some Various Comings of Christ

*1 Emmanuel, Matthew 1:23; John 1:14; John 6:38; Galatians 4:4 This was the coming of the Lord in the flesh, his birth at Bethlehem.

2 Pentecost, Matthew 16:28 (Mark 9:1) Mark 14:62, Matthew 26:64 In some significant way it could be said that Christ also came on Pentecost representatively when he sent his promise of the Holy Spirit.

3 To Paul at His Conversion __ Acts 26:16, Acts 22:7-9 ; 1 Corinthians 15:8 The Lord came to Paul so he could see him alive after his crucifixion and thus qualify him to be an apostle.

a. Hopes shattered! Deceived in John 14:1 and Matthew 11:28

v.17 4. We are yet in our sins

a. What Jesus taught about redemption is vain.

b. "Forgiveness" is nothing but a false dream.

a. Hope of future relations with loved ones is an illusion.

What the Resurrection Means.

1. The world is not a road that leads nowhere.

2. Forgiveness is real! (Sin nailed to the cross)

The end -- Premillennialists say that at the 2nd coming Christ starts reigning, but the Bible says it is the end of his reign, and the kingdom delivered up to God.

Baptized for the dead -- Paul does not stop to explain; his point here is regarding the resurrection, not baptism.

1) Baptism by proxy for the dead (Mormon position).

2) Baptism is a picture of death (a burial in water) and a resurrection to a new life. Romans 6:3-5. If there is no resurrection, baptism (for a man dead in sins) is not a valid picture. (WG, while I have no evidence this is Paul’s meaning here, it is my belief this is what he was meaning.)

Fought with beasts -- Literal beasts are not mentioned in 2 Corinthians 11:23-27. A Roman citizen was exempt from this method of punishment. Paul is speaking of false accusations and false teachers he encountered.

Eat and drink -- tomorrow we die -- An Epicurean maxim.

Be not deceived -- by such doctrine!

Awake -- at once from a drunken sleep. The word only occurs here.

Sin not -- Presence tense.

Your shame -- to shame you.
