COMFORT IN HIS COMING v. 1-6

1 ) "Let not your heart be troubled," (me tarassestho humon he kardia) "Do .not let your heart be troubled," tossed and emotionally agitated like waves of water before an high wind, John 14:27; Isaiah 43:1-2; 2 Thessalonians 2:2. He did not desire that they experience what He felt in His betrayal, John 14:21.

2) "Ye believe in God," (pisteuete eis ton theos) "You all believe in or trust God," the eternal God, and His goodness and care for you all, as He cared for Israel through all her wanderings, 1 Corinthians 6:8.

3) "Believe also in me." (kai eis eme pisteuete) "Believe also in me," or trust me as well; In whom you have so much reason to believe, Isaiah 12:2-3; Ephesians 1:12-13; 1 Peter 1:21. Trust my love and care from Him, to save and help you all, and I will continue to help you when I am gone away, as I make intercession for you to the Father, Hebrews 7:25; 1 John 2:1-2.

1) "In my Father’s house are many mansions," (en te oikia tou patros mou monai pollai eisin) "in my Father’s residence (house) many abodes exist," in the upper temple of my Father, in heaven itself. Or there are many abiding places, in this continuing city, Hebrews 13:14. The picture is that of a Royal dwelling place that provides shelter and care both for the King and his sons.

2) "If it were not so, I would have told you." (ei de me eipon an humin) "Otherwise I would have told you," or if it were not true I would have advised you all, disclosed it to you, instead of telling you that you would follow me, to my house to live with me, after I am gone.

3) "I go to prepare a place for you." (hoti proseuomai hetoimasi topon humin) "Because I go away to prepare a place for you all," to make ready to welcome you all home when you come, John 14:16. As my spirit, and that Holy Spirit which the Father shall send you when I am gone, leads and prepares you to come to be with me, as a joint heir in my Father’s estate, forever! Glorious thought! Divine assurance! 1 Corinthians 2:9; Romans 8:16-17; 2 Timothy 4:7-8. See also Hebrews 6:20; Hebrews 9:24, Revelation 21:2.

1 ) "And if I go and prepare a place for you," (kai ean poreutho kai hetoimaso topon humin) "And if I go and prepare a place for you all," or as surely as I go, I will not desert you, abandon you to find your own way to my Father’s house, and the resting station for you in eternity.

2) "I will come again," (palin erchomai) "I come again," of my own will, choice, or accord. This is an assurance from Jesus Himself, certifying that as surely as He went away on a mission for His own, He would come in a special way to receive His own. That He went into heaven with outstretched hands blessing His own indicates that the same purpose exists as a priority of purpose in His return, Luke 24:50-53; Acts 1:10-11.

3) "And receive you unto myself," (kai poreuomai humus pros emauton) "And I will receive you alongside and to myself," in an intimate way, as certainly as if it were already done. He departed for a little while that He might be with His own forever, 1 Thessalonians 4:17; John 12:26; John 17:24.

4) "That where I am there ye maybe also." (hina hopou eimi ego kai humeis ete) "In order that where I exist you all may also be," be united, exist or reside forever. As also certified Acts 1:10-11; Hebrews 10:36-37; 1 Thessalonians 4:17; 2 Corinthians 5:8; Philippians 1:21.

1) "And whither I go ye know," (kai hopou ego huago oidate) "And where I go away you all know," perceive or comprehend the way to come there. You know the direction I am taking by the way of the cross, John 10:18; Matthew 26:2; Luke 24:7.

2) "And the way ye know." (ten hodon) "As well as the path, road, or way." They also knew, the way of death through which He must pass to redeem them, Isaiah 53:1-12; Matthew 26:31-32.

1) "Thomas saith unto him, Lord," (legei auto Thomas kurie) "Thomas said directly to him, Lord," with love for his Master, but a morbid tendency toward doubt and uncertainty, a seeming trait of his character, John 11:16.

2) "We know not whither thou goest;” (ouk oidamen pou hupageis) "We do not really know where you go," though He had repeatedly told them what awaited Him in His coming betrayal, suffering, and death. He and they did not know clearly or distinctly. It appears that they rather fancied His going to Bethlehem, Nazareth, or Capernaum to be anointed as king, a thing for which many clamored, John 6:15.

3) "And how can we know the way?" (pos oidamen ten hodon) "How do we (then) know the way?" perceive or comprehend the way. Thomas had missed both the “goal" for which He had come into the world, as the "Lamb" of God, to take away the sin of the world, by being lifted up upon the cross, to save the lost, John 1:29; John 3:14-15: Luke 19:10; and the "way-to the Father, by or through Him, John 10:10-11.

1 ) "Jesus saith unto him," (legei auto lesous) "Jesus said personally to him," to dispel doubt or any clouded uncertainty concerning the way to the Father’s house.

2) "I am the way, the truth, and the life:” (ego eimi he hodos kai he aletheia kai he zoe) "I am (exist as) the way, and the truth, and the life;" John 1:4-5, He is the way, the restricted way, not a way, to salvation, remission of sins, and the Father’s House, Acts 4:12; Acts 10:43. He is the truth, who sets men free or liberates them from the slave chains of sin, John 8:32; John 8:36. He is the Life, without which men are dead in trespasses and in sin, Ephesians 2:1-2; John 8:12; John 10:27-28.

3) "No man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (oudes erchetai pros tou patera ei me de’ emou) "No one comes of his own choice to the Father, except through me," as drawn by the Father, by the Spirit, who has been sent from the Father, to reprove and convict, Proverbs 1:20-32; John 16:7-11; Revelation 22:17.

Jesus is the way of access to God by the atonement, Isaiah 25:8-9; John 10:9; Hebrews 10:19-20. And He is the fountain of all truth, so that both He and His word are true, genuine, real from the beginning, Psalms 119:160; John 8:32; John 8:36; John 17:17. And He is the life to which the way leads, and the life points to Him, John 1:17; John 10:27-28.

1) "If ye had known me," (ei egnokeite me) "if you all had known me," fully, as you should, in my birth, my life, my character, my words, and my nature, and who is present in me.

2) "Ye should have known my Father also:" (kai ton patera mou an edeite) "You would also have known my Father," or perceived who my Father is, who exists in me, whom I have manifested to the world, John 17:6-8; John 17:14.

3) "And from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him." (ap’ arti ginoskete auton) "From now (this moment) you all know him," and have beheld Him, as you have beheld me, Hebrews 1:3; John 12:44-45; Colossians 1:15; 1 Timothy 6:16.

1) "Phillip saith unto him;" (legei auto Philippos) "Philip replied directly to him," in earnest sincerity. Yes, one of the twelve apostles yet wavered in understanding, John 5:39.

2) "Lord, show us the Father," (kurie deikson hemin ton patera) "Lord, show to us the Father," as you would show us a man, supposing some visible manifestation of the person of God the Father might be caused to appear, not realizing that that was who He was, Hebrews 1:3.

3) "And it sufficeth us." (kai arkei hemin) "And it suffices or is enough for us," just meet our terms, set all our fears at rest by visibly showing us the Father, Like the Jews who doted on signs, then rejected supernatural prophetic and miraculous signs that were given them, so were the disciples often dull in the flesh and requiring new standards be met by the Lord to convince them of His trustworthiness, 1 Corinthians 1:22-24. Let men see God the Father in His Son, and receive His message, else they would not believe though He came down from heaven, John 8:24; Luke 16:31.

1) "Jesus saith unto him," (legei auto ho lesous) "Jesus responded to him directly," because Philip seemed to have a longing or craving to see the Father.

2) "Have I been so long time with you," (tousoton chronon meth’ humon eimi) "Am I so long a time with you," existing with and near you, for an extended period of continuing time. How much longer has He been with you and me personally, through the clearer revelation and

help of the Holy Spirit? And in and through His church, as He promised, Matthew 28:20; John 14:16-17.

3) "And yet hast thou not known me, Philip?" (kai ouk egnokas me Philippe) "And you have not known me, Philip?" This appears to be a matter of regret to Jesus, after having taught Philip for so long a time; And yet he did not seem to understand that Jesus was the Son of God, or that to have seen and accepted Him, was to have seen and received His heavenly Father.

4) "He that hath seen me hath seen the father;” (ho heorakos eme heoraken ton patera) "The one who has seen me has seen the Father," for the godhead dwelt in Him bodily, Colossians 1:15; Colossians 2:9. This is another clear statement of His oneness and unity with the Father.

5) "And how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?" (pos su legeis deikson hemin ton patera) "Just how do you say or can you say, show us the Father?’’ since I am His express image, through which He shines in you, Hebrews 1:3; 2 Corinthians 4:4.

1) "Believest thou not that I am in the Father," (ou pisteueis hoti ego in to patri) "Do you not believe or trust that I exist in the Father," as One Divine, and the one of Deity, as I have explained to you, and even shown you through the miraculous works that I have done, John 4:36; John 10:38.

2) "And the Father in me?" (kai ho pater en emoi estin) "And the Father exists in me?" in a special disclosure of unity, in the revelation of the trinity of the elohim (or Godhead) of the Old Testament, Genesis 1:11; John 10:38; John 17:2 l, 23.

3) "The words that I speak unto you,’’ (ta hremata ego lego humin) "The words which I say to you all," as my disciples, my New Covenant fellowship of followers, my church which I have called out, Matthew 16:18; John 15:16; John 15:27.

4) "I speak not of myself:" (ap’ emautou ou lalo) "From myself I do not speak," I do not witness, isolated from the Father, but in oneness with Him, as the Divine one, He was Divinity, God Himself, in what He said and what He did, John 8:28.

5) "But the Father that dwelleth in me,"(ho de pater en emoi menon) "Instead the Father who is remaining in me," who indwells me, and I dwell in Him, John 17:21; John 17:23.

6) "He doeth the works." (poiei ta erga autou) "He does his works," through me, for I came as His Icon-likeness, to do His will and works necessary for the redemption and glorification of humanity and the universe, John 5:19-20; John 7:16; John 12:49; John 17:4-5.

1) "Believe me that I am in the Father," (pisteuete moi hoti ego en to patri) "You all believe me, that I exist in the Father," John 17:21. As Jesus, the Father, and the Spirit were one in the Godhead bodily (Colossians 2:9), so are His disciples to be and act as one body, assembly, or fellowship in His church work that He has mandated them to do, Romans 12:5.

2) "And the Father in me:” (kai ho pater en emoi) "And the Father exists in me," (John 17:23; As the Godhead was visibly manifest or reflected in and through the flesh of Jesus Christ for men to see, to behold, 1 Timothy 3:16; John 1:14; John 14:7.

3) "Or else believe me for the very works’ sake." (ei de me dia ta erga auta pisteuete) "Or else you all believe in me because of the works themselves," for the miraculous works are signs, evidence, testamentary evidence, that I am that one who was to come, the Son of God, the Redeemer, the Messiah, Deuteronomy 18:15-19; Isaiah 7:14; Isaiah 9:6; John 3:2;. See also John 5:36; John 10:38; Acts 2:22.

1) "Verily, verily, I say unto you," (amen, amen, lego humin) "Truly, truly, I tell you all plainly," as He continued to comfort them, to give them comfort in their coming trials, 2 Corinthians 1:3-4.

2) "He that believeth on me," (ho pisteuon eis eme) "The one who believes or trusts in me," as they did, except for the continuing carnality of their old nature that still yielded to or was subject to temptations, Romans 7:18­,25; 1 Corinthians 9:27.

3) "The works that I do shall he do also;" (ta erga he ego poio kakeinos poiesei) "The (kind of) works which I do, that one will also do," referring to the miraculous works that He did to attest His having come from the Father, by which many believed, John 2:23; John 3:2; Mark 2:10-11; John 20:30-31.

4) "And greater works than these shall he do;” (kai mezona touton poiesei) "And greater than these he will do,’’ meaning greater in number and over a greater, wider area after they had been empowered as a church, and as individuals, to go forth as witnesses; Mark 16:15-20; Hebrews 2:4. See also Acts 3:6; Acts 13:11-12; Acts 19:11-12.

5) "Because I go unto my Father." (hoti ego pros ton patera poreuomai) "Because I am going to the Father," from where I came, John 14:28; John 16:17.

And after His going, the Holy Ghost that was given by promise to indwell and empower His church forever, John 13:16-17; through which He chose to give miraculous powers to the apostles and individuals, until the Bible was completed; 1 Corinthians 13:10; 1 Corinthians 13:13; Acts 4:30; Acts 5:12; Acts 8:13; Acts 14:3; Romans 15:19; 2 Corinthians 12:12; Hebrews 2:4. He gave these miraculous powers, through the church, as He had in olden times to Moses and Elijah, for a restricted time and particular purposes of attesting that they were from God.

PROMISED ANSWER TO PRAYER, v. 13-15

1) "And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name," (kai hoti an aitesete en to onomati mou) "And whatever you all ask in my name," by my authority, in harmony with my will, as my obedient children, 1 John 3:22; 1 John 5:14. One is to use His name only to enforce or advance His interest not for one’s selfish purpose.

2) "That will I do," (touto poieso) "This I will do;" My Father will recognize my claim to His Divinity by answering prayer that is earnestly and honestly offered in my name, Colossians 3:17; Matthew 7:7-8. But you are to ask in faith, believing, uncovetously, James 1:6; James 4:2-3.

3) "That the Father may be glorified in the Son." (hina doksasthe ho pater en to huio) "In order that the Father may be glorified in the Son," as certified John 14:31; He will be glorified in the fruit that you all bear through faith in and service to me, John 15:8. The asking must be for the advancement of the purpose for which God sent His Son into the world.

1) "If ye shall ask anything in my name," (ean ti aitesete me en to onomati mou) "if you all shall ask anything in my name," John 15:16, anything I have authorized or sanctioned as morally, ethically, or religiously proper, and what you ask by my Spirit will be proper things, always, 1 Corinthians 2:14;

2) "I will do it." (ego pbieso) "I will do it," for you or on behalf of you with gladness, with joy, John 16:23-24.

1) "If ye love me," (lean agapate me) "If you all love me, as you ought," John 14:21; John 14:23.

2) "Keep my commandments." (tas entolas tas emas teresete) "You shall all keep or guard my commandments," John 15:10; 1 John 5:3, that is do what I tell you to do, morally and ethically, in all matters related to right and wrong. Do it by:

a) Letting your light shine, Matthew 5:15-16.

b) Serving, speaking as witnesses of me, Acts 1:8.

c) Regular, faithful assembly in my church, Hebrews 10:24-25.

d) By regular tithes and offerings, Luke 6:38; 1 Corinthians 16:1-2.

e) Being an ambassador for Christ, at all times, 2 Corinthians 5:14; 2 Corinthians 5:20.

THE PROMISE OF THE SPIRIT, v. 16-26

1) "And I will pray the Father," (kago eroteso ton patera) "And I will request the Father," appeal to the Father, my Father in heaven and yours, from whom I came and to whom I am soon returning, John 16:17; John 16:27-28; Luke 11:13.

2) "And he shall give you another comforter," (kai allon parakleton dosei humin) "And he will give-you another comforter," one to strengthen, a paraclete, an helper, one to go along with and beside you, when I have gone to my Father’s residence, He is one who will come into the assembly of you all, and remain there to help you forever, Luke 24:29; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:4.

3) "That he may abide with you forever." (hina he meth’ humon eis ton aiona) "In order that he may be with you all forever, - into the age, the heavenly age, when you come to my Father’s house, as my bride, into the ages, Ephesians 3:21; John 16:7; John 16:13-14. This is something Jesus could not do forever in His bodily presence. This paraclete (comrade or companion) is also referred to as or translated "advocate," as a person called to one’s aid or assistance, especially in courts of justice, to represent or defend one, 1 John 2:1.

1 ) "Even the Spirit of truth;" (to pneuma tes aletheias) "The comforter or paraclete is the Spirit of truth," John 16:13-14, the one who continuously abideth not only in individual believers, sealing them as children of God forever, but also abiding as the comforter, vice-gerent of Christ in and to empower His church forever, Ephesians 4:30; Luke 24:49; Acts 2:4; John 5:26; Ephesians 3:21.

2) "Whom the world cannot receive," (ho kosmos oudunatai labein) "Which one the world order is not able to receive," the unregenerate of humanity, John 15:18-19; 1 Corinthians 2:14. A world out of harmony with God, in darkness and sin, does not comprehend God, except as it yields to the light of His Word and His call through the Spirit, John 6:44.

3) "Because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him;”(hoti ou theorei auto oude ginoskei) "Because it (the world) observes not, nor even knows him," being spiritually ignorant, void of him, and at enmity with my Father, Ephesians 4:18; 2 Corinthians 4:3-4; Romans 8:7-8.

4) "But ye know him;” (humeis ginoskete auto) "You all know him," have experimental knowledge of Him, as believers, disciples, a chosen company of my followers, from the beginning, John 15:16; John 15:27; as Paul knew Him, and as John knew Him, 2 Timothy 1:12; 1 John 3:14; 1 John 4:7; 1 John 4:13, whom to know is eternal life, John 17:3; 1 John 5:18.

5) "For he dwelleth with you," (hoti par ’humin memei) "Because he (the spirit of truth) remains along with you all," personally, for "if any man have not the Spirit of Christ he is none of His," Romans 8:9; John 3:5; John 6:63. To be quickened (made alive) in Christ, by the Spirit, through faith in Christ, is to be a possessor of the Spirit who seals one in Christ unto the resurrection, Ephesians 1:13-14; Ephesians 2:1; Ephesians 2:5; Ephesians 4:30.

6) "And shall be in you." (kai en humin estai) "And in and among you all (as my church, my disciples) He will be or exist," John 14:26, continue to dwell, in a special guiding and empowering manner, in harmony with the Word of truth, John 16:13-14; Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:4; 1 Corinthians 2:8-14.

1 ) "I will not leave you comfortless:" (ouk apheso humas orphanous) "I will not leave you all orphans," or abandon you as orphans, desolate, without someone to comfort you, as a mother or a father in times of anxious care, when bereaved, Isaiah 27:10; 1 Thessalonians 2:17; For He promised, "I will never leave thee nor forsake thee," Hebrews 13:5; 2 Corinthians 1:3-4.

2) "I will come to you." (erchomai pros humas) "I will come to you all,’’ of my own choice, will, or accord, to help, to show that I care, to comfort and assure you, in and through the Spirit, that He was to pray the Father, and the Father was to send to them, on behalf of and to witness of His Son, John 16:13-14; Deuteronomy 31:6.

1 ) "Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more;” (heti mikron kai ho kosmos me ouketi theorei) "Yet a little time and the world beholds me no longer." It can no longer observe, evaluate, or scrutinize me.

2) "But ye see me:” (humeis de theoreite me) "Yet you all behold or observe me," and will again one day, for one day you will come to join me in my Father’s estate, where I am preparing an heir-setting place for you all, Romans 8:17; Romans 8:23.

3) "Because I live, ye shall live also," (hoti ego zo kai humeis zesete) "Because I live you all will also live," I live as the fountain of spiritual life, John 10:27-29. As believers and as an organic institution, my church, Matthew 16:18; Ephesians 3:21, my house, Mark 13:34-35; 1 Timothy 3:15; Hebrews 3:1-6; my bride, John 3:28-29; Revelation 19:7-9. See also Revelation 1:18; Romans 5:10; Romans 8:11; 2 Corinthians 4:10-11; Hebrews 7:25; You will also draw your life from my life, my eternal life, unending in nature and duration, 1 John 5:13. Paul expressed it, "Christ liveth in me," Galatians 2:20.

1 ) "At that day," (en ekeine te hemera) "In that day," when the Spirit of truth has come to empower you to witness of me, Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8; John 16:7; John 16:13-14. The “that day" referred not to Pentecost, but to the Day of the Gentile Dispensation or church age.

2) "Ye shall know that I am in my Father," (gnosesthe humeis hoti ego en to patri mou) "You all will know that I am (or exist) in my Father," in His essence of being, in vital union with Him, the source of all life, John 14:10 and as certified John 10:28-30; John 10:38.

3) "And ye in me, and I in you." (kai humeis en emoi kago en humin) "And you all exist in me, and I am or exist in you all," in your midst always, John 17:12-13; John 17:20. Of this Paul wrote "Christ in you the hope of glory," Colossians 1:27.

1) "He that hath my commandments," (ho echon tas entolas mou) "The one having, holding or possessing my commandments," continually in heart and memory as given John 13:34-35; John 14:15; Luke 9:23.

2) "And keepeth them," (kai teron autas) "And the one who guards, keeps, protects, or adheres to them," observes them, obediently, as a servant obeys his master, John 14:21; John 15:14; 1 John 2:5.

3) "He it is that loveth me:" (ekeinos estin ho agapon me) "That one is the one who loves me," John 15:9-12; John 15:14. True love is not a mere sentimental fancy but affection so genuine of soul that it motivates obedient service.

4) "And he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father," (ho de agapon me agapethesetai hupo tou patros mou) "And the one who loves me (with a priority love), by choice, by his own volition, he will be loved of my Father, for my sake, John 14:23-24.

5) "And I will love him," (kago agapeso auton) "And I will love him," with an holy affectionate love, John 14:21; He loved; He loves; and He will always love His own, unto the end; For it is written, "Having loved His own He loved them unto the end, John 13:1.

6) "And will manifest myself to him." (kai emphaniso auto emauton) "And I will manifest myself personally to him," or make myself known to him, that I dwell in him and that he dwells in me, by the Spirit and by the Word, John 14:21; Romans 8:14-16; Romans 8:26-27; John 17:24-26.

1 ) "Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot," (legei auto loudas ouch ho Iskariotes) "Judas says directly to him, not the Iscariot-Judas," but Judas the brother of James, the Judas who was also known as Lebbaeus, Luke 6:16; Matthew 10:1.

2) "Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us," (kurie kai ti gegonen hoti hemin melleis emphanizein seauton) "Lord, and what has happened that you are about to manifest yourself to us," He, this Judas, had assumed that Jesus would reveal Himself as an earthly messiah or king, Acts 1:6-7, to them as a disciple group, as a called out company that has been called out and chosen by you and followed you, from the beginning, John 15:16; John 15:27; Acts 1:8; Acts 1:21-22; The answer was by the evident sending of the Holy Spirit empowerment, as well as His resurrection appearance to them at least ten times after His death.

3) "And not unto the world?" (kai ouchi to kosmo) "And not to the world order," because the world hated Him, was blind, ignorant of the righteousness of God, under dominion of the god of this world, John 15:18-20; 2 Corinthians 4:3-4; Ephesians 4:18.

1) "Jesus answered and said unto him," (apekrithe lesous kai eipen auto) "Jesus answered and said directly to him," to this Judas, also known as Lebbaeus, and brother of James whose surname was Thaddaeus, Matthew 10:3; Luke 6:16.

2) "If a man love me, he will keep my words:”- (ean tis agapa me ton logon mou teresei) "If anyone loves me he will keep or guard my words," in word and in deed, John 15:12; John 15:17; John 14:5. A thing you all, my followers, my church do, but the world does not; True disciples, servants, and friends of Jesus are to be "doers of the word," followers of their Lord, John 14:15; John 15:14; James 1:22; Ephesians 2:10.

3) "And my Father will love him." (kai ho pater mou agapesei auton) "And my Father will love him," personally, as stated John 14:21; John 3:16; 1 Timothy 3:16.

1 ) "He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings:” ho me agapon me tous logous mou ou terei) "The one who does not love me affectionately keeps not my words,’’ He does not regard my teachings. He who does not serve God by love, does not serve Him by fear either. Fear-service is self-aggrandizement service that is not of God, and avails nothing, Galatians 5:6; Romans 10:1-4; James 2:14-17.

2) "And the word which ye hear is not mine," (kai ho logos akouete ouk estin emos) ’’And the word which you all hear is not (exists not as) mine," personally or individually, not apart from Him who sent me and gave me His message, as I have loved you all and given to you all the teaching and administration of my Word and work, John 5:30; John 5:43.

3) "But the Father’s which sent me." (alla tou pempsantos me patros) "But they are the words or Word of my Father who sent me," John 3:17; John 6:38; John 8:29; John 8:38; John 8:47; John 12:49; John 17:4-5; John 17:8.

1) "These things have I spoken unto you," (tauta lelaleka humin) "These things I have spoken directly to you all," John 13:18-19; John 13:33; John 13:36-38; to you all as my disciples and my church, personally and privately, the things of this chapter in particular, were spoken to a spirit-troubled church company that had been disturbed over His confiding to them of His imminent betrayal and death, John 14:1-3.

2) "Being yet present with you." (par’ humin menon) "While presently remaining with you all," before I go away, in death, and later by ascension back to the Father; as He related Matthew 26:31-32; Acts 1:10-11.

This was an intimate moment of final bequest our Lord was reviewing with His disciples.

1) "But the comforter, which is the Holy Ghost," (ho de parakletos to pneuma to hagion) "Then the comforter, which is the Holy Spirit," whom the Father will send at my request, and on your behalf, John 14:16; John 15:26; Acts 2:4.

2) "Whom the Father will send in my name," (ho pempsei ho pater en to onomati mou) "Whom the Father will send in my name," by my authority, as my vice-gerant, my representative, John 16:6; John 16:15; Luke 24:49; Acts 1:3-4. The phrase "In my name," means to represent me and promote my interest.

3) "He shall teach you all things," (ekeinos humas didaksei panta) "That one will teach you all things," or guide you "into all truth," John 16:13-15; And give you unction to understand and apply my message, 1 John 2:20; 1 John 2:27. He will continue to lead you in my teaching, imparting and understanding my doctrine.

4) "And bring all thing to your remembrance," (kai hupomnesei humas panta) "And he will remind you all of all things," cause you to recall them for purposes of witnessing to those who were inspired, and for purposes of witnessing for every believer, Acts 1:8; Acts 10:43; Revelation 19:10; 2 Timothy 3:16-17.

5) "Whatsoever I have said unto you." (ha eipon humon ego) "Which I told you all personally and directly," John 2:22; Luke 24:25-27; Luke 24:44-45.

1) "Peace I leave with you," (eirenen aphiemi humin) "Peace I give over to you all," which you received from me, by access of faith to justification, a present and continuing state of peace from God and peace with God, Romans 5:1; Which is more than the world could give.

2) "My peace I give unto you:" (eirenen ten emen didomi humin) "My peace I give or dole out to you all," or bequeath to you all, John 16:33; It is also called the "peace of God," that is to rule in one’s heart, in obedient service to God and one’s fellowman, Romans 14:17; Colossians 3:15. The usual farewell was "peace" but in this instance Jesus spoke it as a "will" bequeathed to them.

3) "Not as the world gives," (ou kathos ho kosmos didosin) "Not as the world gives or doles out," as a temporary peace, one that is so empty, that is fickle, that comes and goes, alluding to pleasures, treasures, and honors that come from the world, 1 John 2:15-17.

4) "Give I unto you." (ego didomi humin) "Do I give to you all," for my peace is one that passes (surpasses) "all understanding" in standing guard over heart and mind of His obedient children, Philippians 4:7.

5) "Let not your heart be troubled," (me tarassestho humon he kardia) "Do not let your heart (center of affections) be troubled," overanxious, or frustrated, or a slave to trouble and anxiety, John 14:1; Hebrews 13:5. Don’t let your soul shudder with fear. (mede deiliato) "Nor let it be fearful," Romans 8:15.

1 ) "Ye have heard how I said unto you," (akousate hoti ego eipon humin) "You all heard that I told you," with concern and compassion, John 14:1.

2) "I go away, and come again unto you." (hupago kai erchomai pros humas) "I go and I come again to you all," of my own will and accord, John 14:2-3; As also foretold Deuteronomy 30:3; Psalms 2:1-9; as also later prophesied Acts 1:9­,11; and by Paul, 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18; Hebrews 10:36-37.

3) "If ye loved me, ye would rejoice," (ei egapate me echarete an) "If you all loved me you would have rejoiced," or had joy and gladness, if you loved me as you should because I am going away, going back home to my Father, from whom I have been gone more than 30 years, for your sake, 2 Corinthians 8:9.

4) "Because I said, I go unto the Father:" (hoti poreuomai pros ton patera) "Because I am going to the Father," to my Father and your Father, John 20:17; A thing that should make you glad.

5) "For my Father is greater than I." (hoti ho pater mezion mou estin) "Because my Father is greater than I am," greater at that moment, in glory and happiness. For Jesus had forfeited the glory He once had for a life of humiliation, shame, and a redemptive death, John 17:1; John 17:4-5; Hebrews 1:3; Hebrews 1:10.

1) "And now I have told you," (kai nun eireka humin) "And now and for the future I have told you all," my disciples, and my church. And to be forewarned is to be forearmed.

2) "Before it come to pass," (prin genesthai) "Before it happens, occurs, or comes to be," to exist; Before my going away I want you to be aware of it.

3) "That when it is come to pass, ye might believe." (hina hotan genetai pisteusete) "In order that when it happens you all may believe," believe as you should, steadfastly believe, believe without doubting, be strengthened in your faith, 1 Corinthians 16:13; Ephesians 6:10; 1 Timothy 2:1.

1 ) "Hereafter I will not talk much with you:" (ouketi polla laleso meth’ humon) "I will no longer speak with you all (about) many things," converse but little with you after my seizure by the plotter-band who comes from the chief priests to execute my betrayal, condemnation, and death, Matthew 26:14-16; Mark 14:10-11.

2) "For the prince of this world cometh," (erchetai gar ho tou kosmou archon) "For the ruler of this present world order is coming of his own choice," John 6:70-71; John 3:27, is coming down upon and against me, the prince of power of the air, in doing his thing, through Judas Iscariot and the wicked Jewish rulers, 1 John 5:19; Ephesians 2:2; 1 Thessalonians 2:14-15.

3) "And hath nothing in me." (kai en emoi ouk ouden) "And he does not have or hold in sympathy with anything in me," in harmony with my nature, or in sympathy with anything that I have taught or do, Luke 4:13; This Devil himself incited those wicked ones, whose hour had now come to do their worst, Luke 22:52-53.

1) "But that the world may know," (all’ hina gno ho kosmos) "But in order that the world may realize," recognize or come to know with a certainty.

2) "That I love the Father;"- (hoti agapo ton patera) "That I love (with a priority) the Father," who sent me to seek and save the lost, John 3:16-17; Luke 19:10; John 10:18.

3) "And as the Father gave me commandment," (kai kathos eneteilato moi ho pater) "And just as the Father commanded me," John 10:18; John 17:4; Galatians 4:4-5.

4) "Even so I do." (houtos poio) "Thus I do," go forth to give my life for the world, on behalf of the lost world, as a sheep goes uncomplainingly to the slaughter, Isaiah 53:3 -­12; John 1:29; Philippians 2:8. Jesus was no mere victim of a blood-thirsty, grisly, murder-mob. He could have called a legion of angels to rescue Him, had He not come to give Himself a ransom for many, a sacrifice for all, and to do the Father’s will, John 6:38; Hebrews 10:7; Psalms 40:8.

5) "Arise, let us go hence." (egeiresthe agomen enteuthen) "Rise up , let us go hence," go out from hereto meet the foe, to greet the messengers whose clever designs but hasten me on my way back to my Father’s estate, from which I came down, 2 Corinthians 8:9; Ephesians 4:8-11. The words seem to have been spoken by our Lord in Gethsemane, just before Satan’s hounds came howling up the hill through the darkness of the night, led by Judas Iscariot, to seize Him and seal His sentence of death before sunrise, and the people who had come up to the Passover feast were on the move the following morning, Matthew 26:46-56; Mark 14:42-50; Luke 22:47-53; John 18:1-12.
